Micro-SOFT takes new approach.. Should you?

Microsoft just announced a new CEO today, Satya Nadella. He’s worked for the company since 1992, has the technical goods and gets the vision and vibe of the company. These are the main points mentioned in his selection. He wasn’t some fancy business man who “knows business” and hands were shook and deals made. He worked from the bottom to the top. Literally.

Reading about this, Nadella was quoted in a New York Times article: “In an email to Microsoft employees on Tuesday morning, he wrote that he is “defined by my curiosity and thirst for learning.” I buy more books than I can finish,” he wrote. “I sign up for more online courses than I can complete. I fundamentally believe that if you are not learning new things, you stop doing great and useful things.””

I hadn’t known about this guy before today. But, HELLO! I can confidently say he’s the f***n shit. Work your ass off. Be loyal. LEARN. Motivate yourself. Be great. THERE ARE NO EXCUSES.

You can’t read that and make excuses anymore. You’re just done. I don’t want to hear it. Sorry, I’m not sorry. Mmkay?

Let’s face it he started working for a company in the early stages, they had no idea the monster the company would become. They believed in it. They worked hard. They didn’t let people put roadblocks in the way. Or they did, and they ignored them. (Haters I’m looking at you.) This guy didn’t just get rich with the company and jump ship. He must have believed in it in some way or another, or loved the hell out of his job and kept doing what made him happy. Either way he stuck around and it paid off.

I’m an entrepreneur who’s running a thriving business. Do I want to be 1000x bigger and more successful? Yes – and then I want to by another 5000%. I believe in myself, I believe in my company, I believe in the amazing people that work for and with me. To everyone that tells me enough is never enough for me, I’m never happy, I’m never satisfied. I say to you: I am happy, I am satisfied, but there’s more happiness and greater satisfaction to be had. And, I want it.

I do not intend to stop. I do need to read more. I want to read more. I will read more. Not just to read, but to learn, to expand my knowledge base, to connect to more people. To diversify me, my company, my life and my experience.

Do you think this guy needed to take online courses? Did he need to learn more? He had JOB SECURITY PEOPLE. He had money. He had experience. But he kept reaching for more and now… HE’S THE CEO OF MICROSOFT. He’s the THIRD ONE. The first was Bill Gates. Done and done.

Like I was saying.. No excuses. Make Moves.

Roll ‘Em

The thing that I feel the most lucky and thankful for is my family and friends. But, a close second is that I get to wake up and love every second of what I do for work every day!

It’s easy to follow society’s plan, It goes something like this..

  1. Schooling
  2. Secondary Schooling
  3. Job/Career
  4. Find a Mate/Partner
  5. Co-Habitate
  6. Pets
  7. Pro-Create
  8. Save money
  9. Raise Family
  10. Retire
  11. Eventually punch the ticket..

While all of that sounds great it also sound a little cookie cutter and boring to the opportunistic mind of me and others like me. There are so many things each person should attempt to experience but in order to experience different is to explore different, think different, believe different and want different.

I believe I am different and therefore I behave differently resulting in a different sort of life experience for me. I am both happy and nervous by this state of being but that’s the point. Being nervous isn’t something society says is ok. We are supposed to make comfortable, calculated decisions for everything, REALLY? Nah! I say NAY!

I say make safe decisions and risky decisions combined. Put yourself in a situation to live differently than everyone else. Does that mean go out and buy a Lamborghini? Well maybe but that’s not my point. My point is to try things outside your comfort zone and you just might make your comfort zone a bit bigger.

Make a list of things you would like to try but never have and how you could try them safely. Then implement that list and try one at a time, see if anything changes?

Let me know what your list looks like!

“The only way that we can live, is if we grow. The only way that we can grow is if we change. The only way that we can change is if we learn. The only way we can learn is if we are exposed. And the only way that we can become exposed is if we throw ourselves out into the open. Do it. Throw yourself.”

Happy New Years

Happy New Year! I thought I’d try a twist on New Years resolutions this year. I saw this New Years questionnaire and thought it could be a fun tool to help you think about ways to #MakeMoves in 2014.

  1. A bad habit I’m going to break: At times I doubt the confidence in myself as a person and I just have to remember to reflect in my good decision making and trust in myself in those moments.
  2. A destination I’d like to visit: Chicago
  3. I’m going to work harder at: The back end of my company Klass Universal Ent. I want to place more emphasis on the inner workings of it to help us break into the next level as a business.
  4. A project I’d like to finish: my first BOOK, I am working with a publishing company and a wonderful young editor who’s currently helping me to make this a possibility
  5. A class I’d like to take: Crossfit Level 1 certification and a real vacation.
  6. I’d like to spend more time doing: Other projects that swirl around my head all day, and make an attempt at expanding some other small business ideas I have.
  7. A food I want to eat more of: This would be more protein and good carbs to reenergize myself throughout my work week. Also more home cooked meals in general to spend more time inside working on smaller tasks and ideas I have stored away…
  8. I want to___ more: Read more. And, learn more about business overall: How to be a better owner, dj, entertainer.

How would you answer the above?! How will you #MakeMoves in 2014?!

^^Hahahaha! Thought some of you could have fun with this too 😉

I’d also like to take this chance to thank all of my readers for checking in with me every week – your comments, texts, tweets make me smile! Thinking about another new year of blogging, what would you like to see on the blog this year?! Any ideas/questions/themes.. Let me know, subscribe and I’ll catch ya next week.

Guest Post: Tis the Season… Of Busy Things

…Or as I more affectionately like to call it.. The Festival of Obligations. Now that sounds bad right?

September comes and I’m super excited for the Fall season – it’s my favorite, hands down. I’m enjoying the weather, the leaves and building anticipation for the holiday season.

Then the calls, texts and emails start coming in. I don’t know the actual statistics.. but, it seems to me that 90% of the population was born in the Fall. Every weekend from October – end of December has birthdays, football parties, holiday parties (Halloween weekend before and weekend after, night before Thanksgiving, Black Friday, weekend off, 3 day Columbus day weekend, Holiday parties every weekend of December..), baptisms, births.

I immediately feel overwhelmed, tired and BUSY! The first weekend of events came and I felt dread looking down the long road to January.. until I showed up and had a ton of fun!

Then the dawning realization came over me.. Yes, it’s a lot of activities. Yes, my weekends are full. But, with awesome, celebratory, fun events with all of my favorite people!

This is an amazing and fulfilling time of year. For all of those weekends I do nothing and feel like I should be “doing something” or looking for an activity to do or meaning to catch up with friends or visit family, I now have all of that handed to me on a platter with no planning required. And, more importantly, I get to share in some incredibly special moments with my closest friends.

So, while you’re running around and heavy sighing when your coworkers ask if you have plans for the weekend, try to focus on the memories you’re building, traditions you’re starting and fulfillment you’re gaining.

I’m going to continue calling it the Festival of Obligations because as bad as it sounds on the one hand, on the other, it sounds pretty darn funny.

And, in case you were wondering, I’m busy this weekend.

Thank you to Kupah for asking me to guest post this week!

—Sami

*Note: I did not coin the term Festival of Obligations – I owe all of the credit to my former boss 😉

11:11 & 11:11

With Thanksgiving just around the corner I started thinking about something that I do everyday and I feel pretty confident in assuming most of you out there do it too!

There is a fascination with 11:11 that many of us engage in and I’m pretty sure we don’t even know where it came from. According to Wiki there are a few different ideas as to what it is and what it means. Mostly revolving around superstitions, 11:11 to most of us has become a universal time to make a wish! You will see people locating the time and calling attention to it for those around to join in on making a wish together.

I don’t have any positive or negative opinions about this small phenomenon, rather I would like to add to it. What I began doing a few years ago was getting the most that I could out of the entertaining superstition and using the two 11:11’s that I see in my day for two different purposes.

If you know anything about me then you know I #MakeMoves and I’m constantly trying to raise the awareness of what joys and experiences we get to live daily! I feel that we can sometimes be a spoiled society, forget how well we might have things and get caught up on what we think we need or even sometimes what we think we deserve.

Myself included, I am regularly reminding myself of where I came from and what others have and more importantly, what others may not have. It’s a reality beyond my control and while I see the reasons for some misfortune I still use it to spawn a little humility for me.

So how does this apply to 11:11?

Well what I do is use 11:11 (am) as my time to make a wish. A more traditional new pair of shoes, maybe we are bidding for an event and I’m hopeful that we can beat out competition, etc.

But for 11:11 (pm) I started thinking of something I am GRATEFUL for… Maybe for a friend I have, a movie I recently saw, a new thing I learned, a place I went for the first time. There is a large list of things I can wish for and I take that opportunity every chance I get!

However that PM comes and I look to acknowledge something that I am lucky to have or anything I can be happy about. What’s cool about it is that it doesn’t have to be something taking place AT that time. Just anything I have encountered that day or in recent days that comes to mind.

I hope you try it out and see what comes up when you think of what you’re GRATEFUL for – I think it’s a great way to revisit what makes you work and things that help you on a daily basis.

Keep a balance. It’s necessary to have wishes and wants no matter how silly they may seem to others. Dreams, wishing and wanting is behind a lot of the drive that got me here. But remembering what I’m GRATEFUL for helps me stay focused on the important things…

Trust me there is ALWAYS something to be thankful for, it shouldn’t be too hard to come up with a list. This practice keeps me humble and appreciative of the things that I DO have and doesn’t allow me to get lost in Wants and Desires.

Halloween 2013

Happy Halloween Kids!

I’ve had two tracks of conversation with people this year: Costumes (what to wear/what not to wear/most popular/overdone) and Wanting to Look Good (hot, healthy, wish I had MadeFitnessFun the past month.)

Whether you went out last night or you’re partying this weekend hear are some of Kj’S Thoughts on Halloween:

Costumes: I know a lot of people who plan on doing the typical/boring/lame sexy cop/princess/racecar driver (really?!) thing

C’mon people let’s try for some creativity – you can be anyone you want to be! Insert last year’s blog post: HOLLAween

And, please, don’t dress as Miley. Be creative. Be classy. I’m sorry, I’m not sorry.

On Wanting to Look Good: Now this we can talk about.  50% of looking good is feeling good about yourself. So put your insecurities on hold and own it.

The other 50% is #MakingMoves on the health front.

  1. Drink lots of water. Duh. Flush out your system and de-bloat.
  2. Eat something before you go out and drink. Cut out processed sugar and salt and cut down on your carb intake for the day or day before.
  3. WORKOUT! Workout the day of and the night before you’re going out. You’ll get some quick muscle tone. It helps with the first 50% we were talking about before too.
  4. If you’re going to drink, the above will help you the next day too if you’re feeling a little hungover.
  5. Don’t bar hop. The fashionably late thing is a bad look and the city will be nightmarish (pun intended!) Go somewhere comfortable and make the best between one or two places. Enjoying yourself is healthy for the mind!

If you don’t read anything else, read this:

  1. Don’t drink & drive. Cab it. Uber it. Or, kick it old school and get a DD (Designated Driver)
  2. Don’t be lame. Have fun and do something festive. (Even if you’re just watching Halloween movies and giving out candy)
  3. READ THIS POST: Why You Shouldn’t Pick Up The Halloween Slut – I’m still crying, from laughing. It also will be featured in a book I’ll write one day, as I’m jealous I didn’t write these wise words.

Spoiler Alert from the article: “A rule of thumb: You get what you see. A generic costume gets worn by a generic girl. That’s true whether you’re looking for a girlfriend type on Halloween (bad idea) or just the Halloween hookup.”

6 Rules to Live Life

This isn’t really a movie review, but you can probably see I got something out of it and I think you should definitely check it out. It was one of those things.. I’m watching it and then I heard a line, cleaned my ear out and was like, “say what?!”

That sh*t was real!

The movie is People Like Us starring Chris Pine, Michelle Pfeiffer, Olivia Wilde, Elizabeth Banks and Jon Favreau. The cast should be enough for you all to watch it 😉 Real quick, the movie is about Chris Pine’s return home after his father dies and he finds out about a sister he never knew he had. Craziness ensues.

Seriously though: great talent, deep film, legit life lessons.

The following are 6 quotes from the movie that made an impact on me and I hope they will for all of you. I don’t want to add my own comments because I think they speak loudly on their own. Instead, I hope it sparks a discussion between us and between you and whoever friend/coworker/spouse, etc.

1) If you like something because you think other people will, it’s a sure bet that nobody will.

2) Most doors in the world are closed so if you find one that you want to get into, you sure as hell better have an interesting knock.

3) Everything that you think is important isn’t, and everything that you think isn’t important, is.

4) Don’t shit where you eat.

5) Lean into it, outcome doesn’t matter, be there for it.

6) Never sleep with someone who has more problems than you.

Top Ten Ways to Refocus your Workout for Fall

As I mentioned in last weeks’ post Fall is the perfect time to refocus your fitness routine; start a new one or recharge an old one! Here are some of my favorite ways to get out of a slump or kick it up a notch!

1. Increase cardio as a slower season approaches! This is really important!! In the Summer you’re always gaining some extra physical activity by walking outside, swimming and staying out and about longer with the sun. Once Fall and Winter approach it gets colder and darker and we all tend to stay indoors, do less and watch “just one more TV show” than usual. SO, Increase that cardio and watch TV from a treadmill or elliptical – you can do it!

2. Lower your weight just a tad but increasing your reps. Maybe even add a set as well!

3. Maintain your water intake and servings of fruit.

4. It’s also a good time to change machines (if you tend to use the same one.)

5. The body needs change every 3-4 months so you can change the order of your workouts, time of your workouts or order of each exercise.

6. Try a new class. Group exercise is one of the best ways to have fun and not think about working out.

7. Create a new music playlist: music will help with motivation and light a new fire to your work outs.

8. Try to increase your time by adding even one extra set of a different type of exercise. Adding a quick Abs, Cardio, or Cross fit activity is great as the extra cherry on top. Just 10-15 extra minutes will do.

9. Bring a friend, especially for ladies who don’t want to be bothered at the gym by the creepy guys. We are less likely to approach you in groups of two or more. But there may always be THAT GUY so heads up.

10. Sign up for a race! Talk about motivation!? October is Breast Cancer awareness month and there are a variety of walks and runs throughout the month. Exercise AND raising money for charity = WIN! Here is just one race coming up in Boston!

What’s your exercise workout schedule look like? What’s your favorite routine?

New Season means NEW! So try something else, you might actually like it.

Fall Mornings

Rolling over noticing the sun is up and already beaten you to the start of a new day. You’re not late for anything but you certainly didnt make the early whistles of dawn whispering “it’s time to wake up”. A morning yawn and cat-like stretch causes you to realize the slight drop in temperature from weeks past.

Only when you step outside the thought of a light jacket crosses your mind. There’s a distant fog slowly backing away from your vision. It didnt rain but your vehicle has the slightest touch of dew, the air exhales and the sun approaches it’s position in the sky.

Sun Glasses and Scarf season is here! Fall is an awesome time of year for Klass and myself!

3 Reasons why I’m looking forward to Fall:

  1. Chocolate Bar starts back up! No excuses, come to Chocolate Bar any Saturday for brunch and enjoy amazing food, the best of downtown Boston and sounds by a Klassmate or yours truly 😉 See this post for more details.
  2. Klass Universal Busy Season* It’s the season of Mitzvahs, holiday parties, seasonal weddings.. Time to #MakeMoves! As an aside, stay posted for regular event updates on the blog. I’ll be highlighting an event each week showing you some of the best Klass has to offer and some unique and fun aspects of the event/group itself.
  3. FOOTBALL! – Nuff said. Cannot contain my excitement. You now know where and what I’ll be doing every Sunday.

3 Ways you can make your Fall awesome:

  1. Start a new fitness routine! Get focused NOW before you’re dreading the holiday weight gain. There a ton of Fall races, many of them for charity, sign up for one and build a training plan.
  2. Pumpkin. Now, I’m not really a coffee drinker. But everyone else in my life is going bananas over Pumpkin coffee, pumpkin chai tea.. even my roommate is going on about pumpkin hummus and pumpkin muffins. So, I don’t know – embrace the Fall spirit 😛
  3. Embrace the Back to School season* It’s still back to school season for some of you and even if it’s not, take advantage of it and Shop for a new outfit – go buy a new Fall item; infinity scarves, jackets, running tights. Or, Start a Book – there are so many reasons why you should read more, pick up a book or download one to your iPad or other electronic device and then send me some recommendations.

Welcome Fall!
