Blog to Vlog…

Hi Everyone, It has been a few months since my last post and I wanted to first say Happy New Year (2015) to everyone. I also wanna express my extreme gratitude for each one of you for your support over the last few years following and reading my blog. I set out with the intention to give just a little insight into the life, dreams, motivations, fears, losses and achievements of my life. My hopes and aspirations are and were to help anyone out there looking for some optimism or a positive outlook on whatever their dreams and motives are/were.

I have received such good feedback and awesome suggestions over my time blogging and i hope to have reached you as much as possible and i thank you for this relationship we have built and maintained over the life span of my blog.

I am incredibly excited to announce that i am taking my blog to another level and migrating over to video! Video is overwhelmingly popular today and through years of great feedback many of you have sought after me making my blogs into videos. The sense is that my personality is one you enjoy and that i am able to connect a little better through video vs text. Obviously everyone isn’t saying this but I feel like its a great time to make the change and I hope you all enjoy my next stage along with me.

I have already begun making videos and you can find them all on Youtube Page. My goal is to first turn many of my blog entries into vlogs and of course mix in some other new, fresh material as well. I hope you continue to take this journey with me as I have enjoyed hearing from you. I look forward to more ideas and thoughts of all of you so please do not hesitate to reach out and let me know what you’re thinking.

Kupah James 101: Handling Critics

In this world you have many different types of people: People with different personalities, views, thoughts and motivators. These people do not always get along and the reasons for this are as complicated as the variety of personalities that are out there.

Most of you that read my blog have hopefully, at some point, been moved, inspired and maybe even learned something new and exciting about yourself? That is the sole purpose of my blog and I’m so thankful to read some of your responses and comments via, text, email etc. because you are all making moves you are engaging yourselves into a new way of thinking and gaining momentum in a positive direction. Taking my thoughts to another level and making them your own actions is such an amazing feeling and iI’m encouraged to keep the positivity flowing while we spread this movement forward.

As you continue to grow and enhance your own lifestyle or work ethic you may notice that others around you will not always share in your new excitement. Confusion might strike as to why you are different “all of the sudden.” For example, if you radically change jobs for which you are required to be up earlier than normal, some friends will protest your new curfew and pressure you to stay with what’s “normal.” Or if you find yourself in a new relationship and can’t play with the homies everyday, there may be some tension towards the new boyfriend or girlfriend because of your absences.

I’m going to over generalize these groups of individuals as “Critics.” Critics are a person or persons who are not willing to grow WITH you, alongside you. Instead they could become jealous of your new direction, confused by your new behavior and take it as a personal insult. You might hear things like “You’ve been different since” or “All of the sudden you’re” maybe even “what happened to the old you.”

These are hurtful things to say to a person you care about and what you must understand is that they (critics) could be saying and doing these things from their own emotional place. They are feeling left out of your new direction and possible growth and don’t fully know how to express themselves. It’s unfortunate for you to have to take on more responsibility but you are going to have to attempt to comfort them.

  1. Remind them how much they mean to you.
  2. Communicate what you have been doing and how you are only trying to better yourself as a person to be a better friend, employee, son, daughter, etc.
  3. Sometimes just a sit down and an explanation might be all that’s necessary to untangle the thoughts that have spawned due to all the new activity.

I also want to make sure you know that it is absolutely imperative that you continue on the road you are on and you don’t go back to where you were. People will sometimes say “You forgot where you came from” and that should hurt. I personally have heard it from some of my closest friends and it stays with me and hurts everyday. But it’s not that I forget where I came from rather it’s I know what I’m worth and where I’m headed and pursuing that is the point of life: To move, grow, evolve, enhance, change, develop, inquire, build, format, lose, gain, eat, run, play, sleep, love and #MakeMoves.

I remember where I’m from every single day of my life. It’s what inspires me to move forward and get up and not quit and not take long breaks and not ever be satisfied. We live in a world where we can change our own stars and I don’t know about you but, I have already changed mine and I will not be denied my future because of Critics in my present who never understood my past.

Be aware of how changes in your life impact those around you and then address it (see 1-3 above.) Then, stay the course and trust yourself.

Thanks for reading the blog and following my thoughts. How do you handle critics? Any other ways you can think of?

Inner Playlist of a Dj

The acronym Dj (Disc Jockey) is synonymous with fun, energetic, cool..the list goes on 😉 Most Djs are actually pretty socially awkward individuals who use the manipulation of tracks to speak/entertain the masses. In my case, Djing is a way for me to move the masses while engaging in my own level of enjoyment. Today my thoughts take me through an internal playlist of steps during an event or club night. Every Dj is different, this is just my take on this topic!

First it is important to know that I am crazy nervous each and every time I spin records or emcee an event. To think that as soon as I speak I will have everyone’s undivided attention is a little overwhelming and daunting. There are many ways to get through this but, if you know me at all, then you know that I just DO IT. No time to stress and waste time. It’s time to facilitate, organize and entertain so I do what I’m paid and trusted to do and get out there.

My second thought is who is in the room? Who are my ringers? Ringers are the ones at the party who get the party going for you as soon as you play a top 40 track! Lol. Ringers are good and you need/want them around as they are unpaid interns of entertainment! Ha. Ringers are usually a bridesmaid or relative of the guest of honor or the “class clown” of an organization/company. You don’t have to find the ringer they will find you during cocktail hour and usually ask for the most popular song to be played in the first 10 mins of the event. #Really? Ringers don’t and won’t have to be intoxicated to work either; they are self-sufficient and completely autonomous. Never overlook the Ringers as they can be your guide to many more events and will act as PR experts telling everyone how great you are. Work smarter – not harder.

Now the opposite of the ringers are the Djs sans portfolio! Now these individuals are and can be a nightmare so please, if you have a friend who does this, or better yet, if you are this person: STOP THEM OR STOP YOURSELF! These amazing life forms will usually be sneaking behind the Dj booth, looking over your shoulder, trying to see what your playing and what’s coming up next. If you’re not escorting them out from behind the Dj booth they are in your face asking you to play today’s “hottest music” (as if you didn’t know any better) or worse, they want you to play the bonus track to Elvis’ hidden album on repeat and swear that it will get EVERYONE dancing. Meanwhile, if they did a 180 they would see that the dance-floor is about 90% in full effect at the exact time they want to hear the never ending story theme song! C’Mon people! As if this wasn’t bad enough they are notorious for NOT DANCING and MEAN MUGGING you ALL NIGHT while you PURPOSELY DON’T/WON’T play their song. Sorry I laughed out loud on that one.

These two particular groups are the ones you want to look out for and be mindful of. Aside from them you want to play the best music for your crowd while providing the best amount of interaction. Our job is to inspire and remind our audiences of the fun they can be immersed into by the selection of songs played in particular order.

The goal is to forget what’s going on outside and focus on what’s going on inside. Music is easily the remedy to most mental frustrations and I’m proud and honored to be able to bring together strangers in a night club or share in the celebrations of families at a wedding or honor the Bar or Bat Mitzvah man/woman on their journey to adulthood. Proms are no different; playing hits of the last 10 years while students reminisce on the last four years of their lives and look towards new horizons. Playing that song you forgot about or dancing with that one person who hasn’t danced in years or watching a young one know the words to both a Rihanna song and a Michael Jackson song, seeing ties come off and heels removed (wait wait wait I got a little ahead of myself, heels should always stay on… #KLASSY) but you get the point.

This is what I do and this is the internal playlist of steps Boston’s Kupah James of Klass Universal Entertainment. Should I have the pleasure of entertaining your next party of if I have already had the honor of performing for you in the past, I love what I do and I do what I love. I’m extremely lucky to know and believe this. I plan on providing the Klassiest entertainment this country has ever seen and raising the bar for the next decade of Klassmates. Keep an eye out for Shadi, Bobby, Lindsay, Rachel, Kazz, Hectik, Case, Matty, Evan, J Diaz and more. We are changing the way private parties are played through Klassifying each one of our events and bringing them to the next level!

#MakeMoves! So, let’s hear it: Which are you?! Ringer or “Dj”?

The Day that Einstein Feared

I don’t want to get on a soapbox about the following, I think it speaks for itself. But, it’s something I do feel strongly about and think it so crazy. It was only a few short years ago (or so it seems LOL) that people were only just starting to get cell phones.

The day that Albert Einstein most feared may have finally arrived..

[]

A day at the beach.

[]

Having dinner out with your friends.

[]

Out on an intimate date.

[]

Having a conversation with your BFF

BFF is “Best Friends Forever”

[]

A visit to the museum

[]

Enjoying the sights

[]

It’s hereClick Me!

Communication people! Interface – for real! Share a laugh so someone SEES you laugh out loud, take in the sights while you still have that luxury, spend time with your best friends, put the phone AWAY or OFF on a date.

I’m NOT suggesting  a war with technology, merely highlighting the experiences being missed that are happening right in front of you. I know that even I am guilty of sitting down at a table with friends at times and checking my phone for what is supposed to be a routine check to see if i have missed any notifications and I find myself clicking on a link then tweeting, making sure it posted to Facebook then seeing who retweeted it only to miss the whole introduction provided by the server and now I don’t know what the specials are? Not Making Moves…

I realize that we cannot stop the movement. Cell Phones and social media have already staked their claim on how we interact today and in the future to come. However allow me to offer a few suggestions on integrating them in a better way.

Instead of attempting to 86 cell phones lets make them part of the conversation. Let’s include the content at our fingertips as a way to spark convos or laughs. By bringing the cell phone into the convo rather ignoring your audience to stalk someone’s instagram, we are already off to a better start.

Between ECard, Meme’s, Rotten ECards and N*** Be Like and B**** Be Like there is a wealth of things to get the laughs going at a table and sharing them in person is even better than using group texting and other forms of mass sharing. Or if you are the serious types who yearn for CNN or Sportcenter, use those apps to converse over why we lost Welker and why people should be afraid that North Korea has 6 missile pointed in our direction for “TESTING” Um… We tend to not react very well to threats or imminent violence. Check the history books.

Another suggestion is to use the phones in a timely manner. Such as everyone checking their phones at the same time making appropriate responses, retweeting, stalking, liking and following, then the phones go back in a purse or anywhere that doesn’t disengage the user from the party. I have already begun doing this with myself and my friends. It comes off as rude at first but if you explain to people what you’re trying to accomplish, I feel that most would adopt the thought process behind what I’m saying here.

I am a communicator, if you know me you know that I talk and talk and talk and talk. To some that is not cool but to most it’s perfectly fine because I need to be interactive with people that I am around. It is not to hear myself speak! In fact it because I actually value your presence and self enough to engage in a conversation with you about whatever there is to be talked about. However, ladies and homegirls…. I am not your sister, gay best friend or mom so please spare me the conversations about how the clouds reminded you of the Olympic rings and then you thought about rings and what kind of ring you would want for your wedding which lead you to the rings under your eyes and how you need more concealer to cover it up…(large inhale)… I’m gonna pass on that fun piece of information. Thanks. You know who I’m talking to : )

Anyway in closing I just want to emphasize how important it is to interact and communicate with those around you AND those not around you (FB, TWITTER, INSTAGRAM etc). Never forget that people did many a great things before these services and I think that it would be a very sad thing when kids don’t know how to introduce themselves or ask a question… Think about it. Where do you fit in this time of Cell Phones, Kindles and Computers?

Live this life, enjoy this life and appreciate it. #MakeMoves.

Klass Universal Event Recap: Olivia’s Mitzvah

Spring is almost here and we have begun the 2013 Mitzvah season. This year we started off w a client/friend we have been working with for almost two years!
It was held at the very popular Rumor Boston a local nightclub. Everything was there the sound, lighting and the awesome space. The lovely, talented Ivy Fynn was the event planner and she made sure we had everything we needed.
There were almost 300 in attendance for this bash and Klass was fully staffed with our own Dj Kazz, Shadi, Leanna, Kayla & our newest member Bobby D. Creative Events was also in the building providing temporary tattoos and awesome photo booth novelties. We’ve been integrating more and more novelty items and they add so much to the experience and seriously, where were these items when I was growing up?!
Everyone had a good time and Olivia (guest of honor) looked so pretty, sisters Carley and Leana were also looking quite marvelous. Mom and Dad were ready to let loose and just wanted to make sure everyone danced the night away. To top the night off we even had one of our Djs make a customized mix for everyone at the party. So much fun was had and we are glad that everyone was happy! It really is a success when we can have just as much fun as everyone in attendance!
Below is the letter we received from the planner and we could not be more appreciative of her and the opportunities she gives us!
Any questions about Klass Universal events – please ask! And, as always, subscribe, share and comment. Until Next Time!

How do you challenge yourself to #MakeMoves?

How do you challenge yourself? I write a lot about #MakeMoves and how I strive everyday to accomplish as much as i can and live as much as possible. But, how do I do that everyDAY? How do you?

I have days like everyone else when I don’t want to leave my place and I just want to watch movies or play a game and ignore my phone. And, I definitely take time to do those things, but usually it will be a part of my day, not my entire day. So I don’t call them bad days I have unpleasant “Moments” lol these moment are part of life and I take them and do my best to find the good in every moment. Usually just by trying a little harder those moments become motivators and I continue on a better, happier, healthier path.

I focus on my goals. My goals exist for a reason, they’re things I WANT and ENJOY. This is motivation enough for me. I am very disciplined when it comes to reaching my goals, because my goals are pretty dope as it is! There are times when others will attempt to change my focus and provide unsolicited advice. It may sound a little harsh but I would implore you to not listen to these individuals. Yes, it is in a good nature that they are trying to help. But most cases people never fully understand all the variables and factors going into every/any situation therefore they advice, opinions and thoughts are off by default. It is no fault of theirs and if you tell them then for sure they will be insulted so stay focused on the goals and for goodness sake trust yourself. If you got yourself to Monday and Tuesday then there’s no reason why you can’t make through Wednesday and Thursday, Friday and the weekend will take care of itself. Lol.

I remind myself of how great it feels. It feels pretty amazing to look at what I’ve done in a day and FALL into bed with NO regrets. People want to know why I smile so much.. I’ve made moves all day and created my own happiness what?! It feels great to get new events, meet with new event planners, new clients, new equipment and at the end of the day it feels great doing what I love and even better people love WHAT I DO! So remind yourself of how great it feels to do something good for another or yourself. DO IT!

I know I only have me to blame. This sounds negative but stick with me. I’ve built my circumstances and I’m my own boss, if I stop and fail it’s on me. I not only let down myself but I let down those that support me and believe in me. It’s a big responsibility and enough to keep me moving. There are no excuses in the world of Entrepreneurship and I won’t make any. I come off harsh at time to those I care about and I can only hope they understand the pressure I am under to answer every question when it reaches my desk. I don’t think many understand and I don’t need you to. But My role is a role I welcome gladly, the good/perks and the whole bag that comes with it.

I want to be the change. How can I tell other people to #MakeMoves and to expect more of others, if I slack myself? Let’s face it, I talk about this all day long and I’m not about to be a hypocrite. Lead by example. I didn’t make it up but I remember that phrase in my head all day everyday. But know that if I get my job done you better get yours done as well. Accept responsibility for all not just the rewards.

When it’s hard, I try harder. If I am walking into undiscovered territory, I’m nervous (it DOES happen,) or maybe I’m not feeling 100% I just push forward. I usually end up meeting someone new, LEARNING something new, having a blast or challenging myself physically or mentally. People want to believe in other people so give them something to believe in. If you sound like your knees are trembling then that will show and then your message will get lost in the fray, but if you stand tall and look people in the eyes (STRUT) then with everything you got… Fake it till you make it! It works trust me (wink, wink.) You think I woke up one day and said “Oh, I wanna host events of the highest regard with celebrities and fancy venues, mitvahs and weddings at the State Room?” Haha. Not a chance… I faked it and made it. Period.

You might say, that all sounds great, but is it really a big deal to just say screw it once in awhile? No, it’s not a big deal. But, it’s a choice and it leads to other choices. Giving yourself a reason to dial it in is giving yourself a reason to sell yourself short. No debating about it. Still not convinced? Let’s try this, next time you want to take a “Day Off” think about some man or woman somewhere who isn’t and how much they are accomplishing in those hours you wanted to CHILL. Then, and only then if you still feel like your “Day Off” is justified then go nuts. But if you’re, like me or people that I MakeMoves with, then your picking up what I’m putting down.

How many of those days are enough days to get you off track? How many of those days are days that could have brought you that much closer to something? And honestly, how many of those days do you feel as good about yourself and energized in comparison with the days when you #MakeMoves?
**************

What are your motivators?

How do you challenge yourself?

Tour of Boston: Red Lantern

It’s been awhile since we’ve gone on a Tour of Boston and there are many great places since last time to share with you! First up is a restaurant and bar (more restaurant than bar,) Red Lantern.

Red Lantern is an Asian restaurant on the Back Bay/South End line of Boston. It’s owned by Big Night Entertainment Group who own a few of the best restaurants around – Empire (Seaport), Gem (Beacon Hill), Shrine (Foxwoods.)

Source: opentable.com
Source: Opentable.com

The atmosphere is funky and sexy. Lots of Buddha statues and lantern type lamps (go figure.) It’s a darker restaurant with red lighting; similar to a Lolita glow (which you should also check out for gourmet Mexican food!) I’ve been sat in the restaurant and had drinks at the bar.

Source: Yelp pictures

Most recently, we were sat at a large round table that has a smaller, round table top that revolves, in the middle so that you can share dishes around the table. This was convenient and a great idea because a lot of the dishes, whether it be appetizers, sushi or their bowls are best shared.

Awkward pic but this is the smaller center table

The bar area is small but when I was there, it didn’t get too overcrowded so it wasn’t really a problem and the bartender was great.

I really enjoyed the food! Their menu is pretty standard for high end Asian cuisine, appetizers in the form of potstickers, spring rolls, skewers etc, noodle bowls, rice bowls and sushi.

Their bowl dishes are large so if you don’t have my appetite and ability to consume multiple portions of food by myself, I recommend sharing or you’ll at least have leftovers. Their sushi was really fresh tasting and packed a lot of flavor.

Charashi Naruto roll

I’m not quite sure how to rate their service. The hostess who greeted me was great, friendly, knowledgeable and when some of the people I was with were running late, she put me at ease about the whole thing. My server seemed disinterested in taking our orders or answering questions and was never to be found when we wanted to order more or get the check.

However, on other occasions when I’ve been there I had no complaints, but also nothing standout and as I mentioned before, the bartender at the bar was great. Maybe it was just that one?

Just for fun - what's up?!

Their prices are moderate, pretty normal for that part of the city and type of place. Overall I would recommend it and it’s conveniently located to both the South End and Back Bay if you’re going out afterwards. Super close T access and $10 (night and weekend) garage at the end of the street (so I’m told… I valeted LOL)

Have any of you been to Red Lantern yet? Thoughts?! As always, share, tweet, Facebook, subscribe and…….. until next time,

Breathe. Stretch. Pose. Let it go.

I had mentioned on my previous fitness post that I go to a yoga class twice a week and I thought I’d tell all of you about my classes and about my experience getting into yoga. As I had no idea when I started.

When it came to yoga in general I was a blank slate – I knew it was focused on stretching, breathing and overall calmness but that was about it. I went to a class, a traditional yoga class, and it was just too dull/not challenging enough for me. I like stimulation and to feel some energy!

After this, a friend invited me to a Bikram yoga class. I don’t know if any of you have heard of or been to a Bikram yoga class but it’s basically yoga in an extremely hot room. Like over 100 degrees, those of you that know me personally know I already sweat a ton when it’s cold out, you should see me in a Bikram yoga class #JuSayin. Each class is 90 minutes long and covers 26 poses and breathing exercises.

When I went to my first class I had just pulled my back (I would not recommend exercising/yoga when you’re injured) my muscle was inflamed, I was very uncomfortable. But, even though I was really hurting I was still so calm. I went back when my  back was better and was sold. I love Bikram and look forward to my classes. They’re a KJ#CoSigned way to #MakeFitnessFun

Source: Google Images

It’s the only thing I do for me specifically and each time I go I’m in competition with myself. In competition over poses; getting an extra inch out of bend or stretch that kinda thing. For example, there’s a spine-twisting pose and I just can’t get my arm behind my knee and down to the other knee. But I will and I work towards that LOL.

Source: BikramYoga.com

On a sidenote I am extremely humbled by all of the women in the classes who were killing it! I am so impressed each time.

End of the day I love Bikram, I highly recommend it for any and everyone. Men get to a class, women bring your men to a class! 90 minutes in a crazy hot room sounds intense, and it is, but it’s also relaxing and does so much for your flexibility, balance, well-being.

Let me know your thoughts! Have you ever tried a yoga class? What was your experience like, have you tried different versions?

As always, thanks for reading!

Top Ten Worst Jobs In or On a Movie

I would consider myself a pretty big movie fan. I don’t really discriminate with movies, if something new comes out, I see it. Something comes out on Bluray that I wanted to see or liked, I buy it (then to download the digital copy because, let’s face it, that’s the future people.) I go to the movies every Friday morning/afternoon. My Cuzo would tell you that I have bad taste in movies (and I would say he has some interesting taste himself cough * Ninja Assassin * cough.) I just think I’ll see a movie because some movies that never received much praise have ended up being classics over time. It doesn’t mean I LIKE every movie that I see, but I’m open minded.

Rant over. Basically in watching a number of movies I started noticing the small jobs some characters have that have got to be the worst and then some behind the scenes, working on the movie jobs, that have also got to be the worst. Who knows maybe a movie is a movie and it’s all great?! But, I figured I’d do a top ten of the worst seeming jobs in or on movies.

10. Evil henchman

9. Stunt double – All guts, no glory

8. Evil Henchman stunt double

7. Waiter/Waitress – They’re usually struggling, picked on, victims of a robbery or someone skipping out on a bill (think Pulp Fiction)

Source: IMDb

6. Convenience clerk/Cashier

5. The people who have to make all of an actors/actresses dressing room demands happen

4. The people that have to hold cue cards

3. The guy in charge of the clapboard on Stanley Kubrick films— (Anyone besides my roomie get this one LOL?!)

2. Whoever types all of the thank yous/location info/nonsense at the end of movie credits

1. Playing the president of the USA – I know you all must be thinking I’m crazy, but let’s face it.. Whenever there’s a movie with the president earth is being attacked by asteroids, aliens, end of time, someone is trying to assassinate them, or they’re made fun of – Not exactly a fun role in my opinion.

What are some of the worst seeming jobs in or on movies in YOUR opinions!? Thanks for reading, hope you all have a safe and fun weekend. #MakeMoves

The WORK(B4 I Go)OUT

6′, 200 lbs of straight man-child is what I am. Half Black, Half Puerto Rican and I’m a fitness fanatic. And, not just in the gym, but across the board in my thinking and my behaviors.

There’s so much conversation about fitness today regarding eating, supplements and sleeping patterns etc. I am frequently asked what I do to exercise, eat and any general health routines I follow. I am not about to make any recommendations or tell you what you should do because I believe, and I do want to stress, in the importance of your individual life and chemical makeup. So full Disclaimer: The following is what I do, that works for me individually and may not be right for you. I am not a dietician or personal trainer and none of what I write about should be taken as medical advice or recommendations.

I, for example have an overactive thyroid gland that borders on HyperThyroidism. Your thyroid regulates your metabolism, which determines how fast and effective your body breaks down food in your digestive system. What hyperthyroidism means for me is that I can pretty much eat whatever, whenever (hate me, I know) because I will process it at an accelerated rate. With that said I still take pride in a healthy-ER diet however, I have no problem crushing a double cheeseburger with everything at 12 Midnight and then passing out.

My actual lifestyle acts as my work out in many ways as I am constantly moving for work and I’m an active, busy person in general. I get about 5-1/2 to 6hrs each night which works well for me. I do change up the bulk of my exercise/fitness routine quite frequently, but I did want to include what my typical exercise week has looked like for the past few months.

Monday

  • Morning: KJ 20 Min AM Routine
  • Evening: Street Feet(Cardio), Body Pump(Cardio Build)

Tuesday

  • Morning: 90 Min Bikram Yoga (Core)
  • Evening: Gym (Build) – I always do a strength workout, usually upper body

Wednesday

  • Morning: KJ 20 Min AM Routine
  • Basketball with the fellas (Cardio)

Thursday

  • Morning: 90 Min Bikram Yoga (Core)
  • Evening: Gym (Build) – I always do a strength workout, usually upper body

Friday

  • Morning: KJ Morning Routine Redux – Repeat 5x
    • 100 Push ups
    • 100 Crunches
    • 30 Pull ups
    • 30 Chin ups

Fitness is such an important part of my life and one of my deepest passions that I’d like to start sharing more about my active lifestyle and different work outs or healthy living details that I try out or adopt. Please let me know if you have any questions in the meantime and maybe I can create a post with that information!

As always thanks for reading and spread the word #MakeFitnessFun #MakeMoves
